Your car is a large investment that most people pay off over a long period of time. Because of this, you are likely going to want to take all the measures you can to keep your car running as long as possible. This grows your investment in your car by increasing the years of functionality. Whether you buy your car new or used, you can make sure that you get your money's worth out of the vehicle.

Get Car Insurance

Car insurance protects both you and your vehicle in the case that you get in an accident and if there are motor failures that fall within your insurances contract. Having car insurance is actually required in many places because it also protects anyone that is involved in an accident where you are found at fault. When you first buy a car, you will want to get multiple car insurance quotes so you know you are getting a good deal. From there you can review your quotes, the services they include, and the reputation of the company and then choose which company best fits your needs. Having car insurance guarantees that your car can be fixed after an accident for a reduced price and you will not be left without a vehicle. Insurance also covers personal protection so if you are injured in an accident, you can get the treatment you need.

Perform Scheduled Maintenance

Your car is a machine that needs to be checked and maintained to keep functioning. Typically the manufacturer of your vehicle offers you a maintenance schedule that they recommend you follow. It is typically dictated by how many miles the car has driven. These routine checkups include an inspection of the entire vehicle so you are aware if there are any issues that have arisen. It also includes lubricating or replacing different parts of the vehicle. Your scheduled maintenance is based on how old your car is and what would usually be breaking down or needing replacement by the time that mileage is accumulated on the car. These schedules also check things that are not usually checked when you get other maintenance that occurs more often.

Change Your Oil

Many professionals recommend that you get your oil changed every 3,000 miles or every three months. Many newer cars will actually alert you when it is time to get your oil changed. That being said, it is important to get your oil changed regularly because it is integral to the functionality of your car. When you get your oil changed, ask the technicians to also check other fluids in your car. This usually includes checking automatic transmission fluid, coolant, windshield wiper fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. Most of the time, technicians will automatically top off these fluids when you get an oil change. Running out of any of these fluids can lead to serious damage to your vehicle whether immediately or over time.

Replace Your Air Filters

Your air filters are ridiculously simple to replace. Most vehicles usually have two of them: one for the engine and one for the cabin. The cabin air filter is very inexpensive and should be replaced often. You know you need to replace your air filter if you keep smelling something off or downright disgusting in your car. You can also just physically check it since you will be able to see the dirt collected on the air filter. For your engine air filter, you may want to have a professional replace it depending on your level of competency with vehicle maintenance. The engine air filter assists the engine in running smoother; when you do not replace the air filter, the engine will end up working harder, therefore, shortening the life of your vehicle.

Keeping your car running longer depends on consistent maintenance on your vehicle. If you want your car to last, then you need to put in the work to make that happen. While it is not a guarantee, making sure your car is maintained is the best way you can try to keep your car running.
