The holiday season is on its way. Thanksgiving through New Year's Day is a time of celebration with family, friends and food – delicious, unhealthy food. It's a timeframe when people allow themselves to forget about their healthy diets, leaving them scrambling to lose that winter weight before bikini season arrives. Don't let yourself get stuck in this situation. Here are five ways to stay in shape over the holidays.

1. Maintain Your Workout Routine

Although holidays are busy, try to keep up with your regular fitness routine. If you have to alter it, choose a more appropriate time with the workout you're accustomed to doing. Even if you have a weekly schedule, plan to exercise whenever you have downtime. If you can swing a morning run, do it. Mornings are opportune times to engage in physical activity. The longer in the day you wait, the more unlikely it is that you'll exercise. Procrastination leads to blown opportunities, which, in this case, is a good workout. To get the most out of your routine, slap on a Thrive Patch, as it can help with weight management.

If you need some extra exercise motivation, recruit a friend to work out with. When attempting to work out independently, you have no responsibility to anyone and can put it off for a few days. However, with a partner, you have someone to report to and who expects you to push them as much as they push you. Your workouts together can be as simple as walking in the park or as intense as taking a Zumba class.

2. Exercise When Traveling

Keeping your regular exercise routine when you have to travel for the holidays can be next to impossible. However, if you research nearby gyms, swimming pools or trails, you'll still be able to meet your workout goals. After all, switching up the scenery is a welcome change if you're used to seeing the same workout spaces again and again.

3. Drink Plenty of Water

Staying hydrated is essential all year long, but drinking extra water over the holiday season works miracles. If you drink a glass of water before dinner, you'll feel fuller faster, helping you to eat less overall.

4. Eat Regular Meals

If you have a holiday dinner planned at a friend's house, make sure to eat regular meals before attending instead of skipping them to save room for the big feast. Skipping meals makes your metabolism slow down, which causes you to burn fewer calories.

By fasting until dinner, you may have no energy, feel tired, get shaky or even develop a headache by the time you get to the party. Upon arriving at the guest's house, you'll be so hungry that you'll end up overeating, which may leave you feeling sick.

Alternatively, if you eat breakfast and lunch, you'll feel great when you get to the party, and you won't stuff yourself until you can't move. In addition, you'll make healthier choices during dinner because your body won't be in starvation mode.

5. Indulge Occasionally

It's not a negative thing to eat more than you'd like to admit for one day. The holidays are a time of celebration, which are generally commemorated with good company and better food. However, if you don't want to gain weight, keep this level of indulging limited to one day only. The biggest problem with holidays is the leftovers. Rather than keeping everything when the holiday is over, split extra food with family and friends or toss the leftovers out. Otherwise, you'll start to snack on these goodies too often, causing the number on the scale to increase.

It's acceptable to splurge occasionally, but if you want to stay fit, you have to monitor the types and amounts of food you're eating over the holidays. Because gaining weight is easy, but losing it is difficult, it's important to maintain your exercise routine and increase your workout level to compensate for indulging a little too much. If you stick to these tips, you won't have to engage in extreme dieting to get in shape for summer; you'll already be there.
