If art imitates life, then expertly crafted video games show the world that personal evolution is not only attainable, but opportunities to level up are all around. Keep reading for effective ways to accumulate as many life points as possible and make steps toward becoming your best self. 

1. Do Something You’ve Always Wanted to Do

Most people acknowledge the merits of living life to the fullest, but few really take that ideology to heart and treat each day as though it’s filled with both opportunity and impermanence. To really grab life by the horns, go out of your way to finally make a dream happen for yourself. 

If you have always wanted to compete in a bodybuilding contest, start a GOMAD regimen and sign up with a personal trainer. If you’ve always dreamed of learning the guitar, grab a pick and queue up a few free beginner-friendly videos online. It doesn’t even have to cost money, and it can even be accomplished in just a few minutes a day if that’s all you have. 

2. Invest in Your Close Relationships

They say people are all we have, and there is validity in that statement. The people that see you through all the good and bad days can show up for you in ways that no job, bank account or prized possessions ever could. 

For this reason, it’s never a bad idea to go the extra mile to really tighten ties between you and the people who matter most. Make it a priority to send a few check-in texts, schedule a video call or head out after work for drinks with an old friend as often as your schedule allows. 

3. Make Time for Your Hobbies

Life gets extremely busy–and fast. It’s important to slow down and make personal time a priority to maintain a good head on your shoulders. Dedicate a certain amount of time each week to a hobby or interest, and consider this time as immovable on your agenda as an important work meeting or presentation. Not only is engaging in your hobbies a great way to relieve stress and include a little fun in your world, but it’s also a way to further get to know yourself through the lens of something you’re passionate about. 

4. Make Real Progress Toward a Goal

Chances are, you have a few goals and dreams you’ve placed on the backburner, but fully intend to reprioritize when you have the time. The perfect time to chase those dreams may never materialize, so find a way to make it happen today. 

If your goals are ambitious, break them down into smaller, more manageable goals so you can make sustainable progress right where you are. Even small steps bring you a little bit closer to a better version of you, and there’s no better time than the present to take your dreams seriously. 

5. Start a Personal Practice

The popularity of self-work has gained momentum for a reason. Meditation, self-discovery and inner exploration have many noted benefits. Those who practice mindfulness are more likely to report feelings of increased self-awareness, inner peace, gratitude, a more solid sense of self and general feelings of happiness. 

You don’t have to sit cross-legged and try to empty your mind to incorporate a personal wellness practice into your life. Find something that allows you to slow down, turn inward and do some soul searching in ways that feel sustainable, safe and enjoyable for you. Journaling, deep breathing, soothing playlists, yoga, meditation podcasts and gentle, repetitive tasks all have brain and body-soothing benefits. 

6. Take Your Physical Health Seriously

If you’re like most people, you recognize that your diet and exercise regimens could use a few improvements. Rather than wait until the first of the year to make personal health and wellness goals, start today. It can be as simple as drinking more water each day or as complicated as training for a marathon. Whatever it is, focus on how your daily actions can nourish and strengthen your body. A healthy body and mind will better enable you to enjoy a long, healthy life–and when you’ve leveled up, you’re going to want to reap the benefits for as long as you can.
