Ok, so I guess I have to say something, but what I have to say isn't new. I still want to embrace the things we would do to address global warming, because it is a good idea weather or not global warming is real.
Those emails from climate scientists that mention "tricks" and "hiding the warming" don't mean what those quotes appear to say, but they are making some headway for the denier community.
If it is true that the climate scientists are lying to support the global warming theory it doesn't mean that the theory is wrong. We have caught the deniers making bold faced lies, and that didn't disprove their theory, did it? So go ahead and hang the scientists, but leave the theory alone!!
Just be reasonable - by pumping 28 billion metric tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year, from our burning so much oil and coal, THERE HAS TO BE SOME EFFECT. That much CO2 cannot be benign. Is the effect of the CO2 going to be warming, or something else? It probably would be warming, because nobody denies the fact that CO2 does trap heat when enough of it is in the atmosphere. Most deniers merely argue that it isn't warming YET; other deniers claim that the CO2 would be good for nature, for the plants that use CO2 [but they don't know for sure that extra plant growth would be a good thing, do they?]. That much CO2, so suddenly in nature's timescale, isn't natural and will have some effect. We should be carefull, and being carefull means doing some things that we should do anyhow, on their own merits, such as renewable energy and electric cars.
Oh ya, the oceans. Sorry, slipped my mind. The OCEANS are being killed by CO2. CO2 emissions have a direct chemical way of acidifying the oceans. Coral is bleaching, plankton are dying, we can see it, it isn't good. This is a problem with CO2 that could be a bigger problem than global warming [if it is real]. Please read a short, easy, book called "Sea Sick" by Alana Mitchell and you will be convinced that there is more to CO2 than global warming!! Gauranteed!!!
And, you CAN SEE THE SMOG. That must be real enough for anyone. Its not a good thing. SMOG comes from burning fossil fuels [nobody argues against that]. Embracing the actions we would take to address global warming are the same things that will remove the smog.
Even if we just forget about global warming, as in "if it is real or not", what I want, and I know many of you also want, are a lot of the exact same things that would otherwise be used to address global warming [by reducing emissions].
Such as - the electric car. Ya!! No more gasoline, free miles!! All those engine parts that won't be needed that we allways have to repair or replace, such as fuel pumps, water pumps, oil pumps, air filters, oil filters, oil pans that get holes in them from rocks hitting them and then all the oil leaks out and your motor seizes, starter motor, alternator, radiator and hoses, fan belts, carburator or fuel injection, spark plugs and wires, timing belt, distributor, and those engine parts that gum up or wear out such as valves and injectors and pistons. All gone! Where is my electric car!!!
And - renewable energy would be the greatest investment our generation[s] can make, because just 10 years after each wind turbine or solar panel is put into use, it will be paid for and producing FREE electricity, probably for another 20 years at almost peak performance [solar panels are typically gauranteed to produce 90% of their stated wattage for 20 years, and they are generally expected to keep performing well for 30 or 40 years]. Renewable energy provides 10 times the jobs per unit of energy as compared to the oil industry. Economically, investing in ample renewable energy to supply 80% of our electricity needs is about all the stimulus that is needed to get us out of this slump.
What I mean is - renewable energy will be our saviour, providing clean and cheap energy for us, and we could have enough capacity installed to provide 80% of our electricity needs by investing about $500 Billion per year for 20 years worldwide [half the cost of the war]. We could have clean clear skies, it would slow the warming [if it is real] and we would have cheap energy. Just do it, climate change or not. Renewable energy is the way.
Shutting in coal burners and tar sands has a lot of bonuses too. Pollution is killing us, that is accepted now. The land will look a lot healthier with wind turbines above it than with the oil industry killing it.
So I say lets go ahead and embrace the idea of reducing emissions. There are other problems that global warming, and there are only benefits to ending the era of oil. {Oh ya, that problem with oil > war....for next time!}
