Plant Parenthood Garden Management Journal Aug 14 2014   10 y
I had a vision during the night of the many unwell plants we have here. We are responsible for 1/3 acre. The Overgrowth is having its way with m and bothers me very much. Many other plants that wete planted by Ken last year, are not doing well. I just took some time with Kevin to go out to the garden. I am in gratitude to have him living here. We are going to do some plant experiments. Beginning of New Plant Parenthood Garden Management Journal

I want to stay at the 1880 unlon Hotel Los Alamos on my trip to the National Heirloom Expo! --I want to stay here!

This place is amazing. Every detail is well thought out and theme shines at every corner. The wild west saloon feel is quite authentic, not cheesy or kitschy. The upstairs and rooms are even better than the main saloon. While maintaining a very old time feel the bed was shockingly comfortable and the bathroom was clean. There was even an in room air conditioner (which we NEEDED). When booking note that some rooms use a shared bathroom, some have private baths (tub vs shower vs both are also different room to room) The staff is accommodating and genuinely happy your there. Seed Libraries, a great new book!   10 y
Seed Libraries, a great new book by Cindy Conner! Historically, seed companies were generally small, often family-run businesses. Because they were regionally-based, they could focus on varieties well-suited to the local environment. A Pacific Northwest company, for example, would specialize in different cultivars than a company based in the Southeast. However the absorption of these small, independent seed businesses into large multinationals, combined with the advancement of biotechnology resulting in hybrids and GMO seeds, has led to a serious loss of genetic diversity. The public is now at the mercy of the corporations who control the seeds. In the past few years, gardeners have realized the inherent danger in this situation. A growing movement is striving to preserve and expand our stock of heritage and heirloom varieties through seed saving and sharing opportunities. Seed Libraries is a practical guide to saving seeds…

Uprisings is an inspiring book! Uprisings A Hands-On Guide to the Community Grain Revolution by Sarah Simpson & Heather McLeod If we want to reduce our environmental impact, build resiliency in our community and improve food security, it’s up to us to make it happen. In many North American communities, the instrument of change is ... grain. Grain is the perfect metaphor for how we’ve lost control of our food supply, and with it the skills and tools to feed ourselves. Uprisings shows how communities can take back their power by reviving local grain production to improve food s ...   read more

Seed Libraries in the news

SEED LIBRARIES IN THE NEWS great story! This spring, your next packet of garden seeds may come not from a hardware store or nursery, but from your local public library. Fighting to stay relevant in the digital age, public libraries have taken to lending all manner of weird and wonderful items: hand tools, baking pans, fishing poles, telescopes and knitting needles, among others. Don’t like the memoir offerings at your local branch? Bring a USB thumb drive, plug it in at one of several massive Espresso Book Machines and print a hard-cover copy of your own memoir — or any other ob ...   read more

Food Security--Svalbart seed vault vs 10,000 Seed Libraries

This is a Plant Your Dream Blog that I want to develop. It begins with some research. I discovered a great group that I introduce here, AGRA WATCH, that looks at the Gates Foundation and its dealings. The Gates Foundation is highly invested in GMO Ag in Africa. They are also big investors in the Svalbart Seed Bank in Norway. The Svalbart Seed Bank stories many varieties of Heirloom with the intent of preserving these seeds stocks. I feel safer having our Heirloom Gene Diversity in the care of 10,000 or more Seed Libraries. The Seed Library Movement came to my attention ...   read more
