USS Furse new chapters in Naval History...   19 y
This ship was a steaming, a get up and go type destroyer... It blazed a few pages in US Naval history; while I was on board!! If you don't try then you will never do anything...

Charleston was a good place and a sad place, for me....  When I finally got on Board The Furse DDR882, it was a new experience...   This was one of the first line destroyers of the Atlantic fleet...  It was a Radar Picket ship...  That meant it had a Azimuth Height tracking Radar, it could track satellites, ICBMs and the high flying Spy planes...  It was originally part of the DEW line early warning system, monitoring possible ICBM launches from the USSR...  These were the days of the real " Cold War "... My Navy life ...   read more

At sea once again... we are riding the waves...   19 y
Life at sea offers many opportunities to see, many different and wonderful things and places.... If we take the time to look!!

At sea you can see many different and wonderful things... My time stationed out of Key West island left a wonderful lasting impression on my young man’s mind...   It is these opportunities in life that help to mold and shape us .... The destroyer escort; Greenwood DE679, was decommission back to the reserve fleet, and assigned as a Naval Reserve Training ship in Bayboro Harbor, FL...   Well I knew most of the crew would be transfered to other active duty ships, so we spent our time, standing watches and doing maintenance on the ship...  ...   read more

More sea stories...   19 y
Give me a warm sea breeze on a quite afternoon, with the sound of waves in the distance and I can be happy....

Gitmo Bay Cuba, beautiful place to dive....   19 y
You can make where you are the best place on earth if you want to...

Gitmo Bay Cuba, a nice tropical spot.... Well we spent some quality time in those warm clear waters, before going off to do Navy stuff, you know ships such work...  NO females much down there... But I had to be some where so this was the spot at that moment in time...  We played war games most of the day and sometimes into the night...  Then we held critiques on what we did, {usually wrong} and then get to do it all over the next day...  What fun...      read more

Back to my Navy days, folks.... Adventure on the high seas...   19 y
My days as a sailor, allowed a young man to really see the world as it is, what a lesson....

Well I will go back to the years spent roaming the oceans wide.... While in  the floating forces, or Uncle Sam’s Canoe Club, as we called the US Navy....     This was me at age 20, ....  While I was assigned to the USS FURSE DDR882, out of Charleston Naval Station There were more adventures on the USS Greenwood DE679, out of Key West; which we have discussed on previous blogs,{ you can go back and review if you missed them...}  It was way down in Jamaica, that we went my first Christmas away from home and the good Ole USA...  We mis ...   read more

The true story of a remarkable man we met on the trail....   19 y
He goes by "Just an Echo"... {We never learned his given name) If you venture onto the AT, and ask around or stop by one of the many trail shelters, you will find evidence of his writing and stories in the trail logs there...

Well when we ventured upon the AT last week little did we know that GOD had placed a unique individual in our pathways...   A 70 year old man, in good physical condition, with a hard life, and an open heart with a contrite spirit.... We first noted his prose in a trail log at the Gooch Mt. shelter...  These logs are there for anyone to make entries into...  Most just list names and dates...  Some make smart remarks, and others like "Just an Echo", write of life and trail magic... Little did we know that we would catch up with him at the&n ...   read more

On the Appalachian Trail we met " Just an Echo "...   19 y
Many times in life you (we) are destined to meet certain people, this was such a case on the AT this week...

Well we can say that the great outdoors offers many unexpected things.... So it was as we did part of the Georgia section of the Appalachian Trail (AT) this week....  Our schedule was to do about thirty some miles of the Georgia section of the AT, in under four days, or all most 10 miles a day...   One of my brothers who just happened to live about twenty miles from the southern terminus of the AT, dropped us off at Woody gap trail crossing, at 16:30 on Wensday...  There was some light rain, but not any real threats, so we pressed on...  We ...   read more

I will present some sea stories; which will be based on events either I experienced or some that were related to me...   Here we go, this will be on on going blog entry, so check back from time to time to catch the latest part of the story...  This first is fiction, and yes I have been to Zanzibar, folks....  So read on for an adventure on the high seas... Chapter 1  Once upon a sailor’s dream... The sky was wild and the waves beat relentlessly against the sea wall...  An  old sailor who sat by the docks and ...   read more

Lions and tigers and frogmen; OH MY!!   19 y
We jump ahead to another US Navy frogman story, one that almost get someone killed...

We now jump ahead a year or so, to see another frogman story....  This one came close to getting someone {the frogman} killed... The second destroyer, I served on was out of Charleston SC Naval base, not as nice as Key West, but that is life we go where we must...  Well it came time for Tender {A large repair ship } availability, and we were sent to Mayport, FL {JAX}..  For those of you that are not familiar with US Navy ships....  The much larger ship {The Destroyer Tender} is moored next to the pier, then the smaller destroyers are tied outboard ...   read more

U.S. Navy Underwater Swimmers School; Key West, Fla... Some interesting events...

Back to my Navy years, and some of the actives with the underwater swimmers... Well Key West is a gates place to swim and dive...  We are talking SCUBA, here folks... Well every service sent it people here to train, now there are other swimmer schools; one is in San Diego, CA... Another is in Hawaii, ect... Today we are looking at the Key West Naval Station only... Key West was the only place in the conterminous United States that stayed in "Whites" years round.. Navy white uniforms....  The Marines at the gates were also tropical uniforms and wor ...   read more

The road of life leads to some interesting places...   19 y
What you do on your road of life, is more how you act, than where you are....

There were times on my road of life that I said; self what are we doing here?? The key to our journey is to be willing and ready to respond to what ever comes our way...  That does not meet jump on every sexy female you meet, ( or for the gals try to get every cute boy you see to come hold and caress you...)...   I believe we all are aware of this.... If not we need to talk.... You (we) will have many things and opportunities come up as we travel down life’s pathway... It is up to each of us to decide when and where we will react and how...&nb ...   read more

This is an over view for all of us on this road of life....

Folks this is a over view for all of us on this road of life....  We must all learn to: 1) Pay attention... This is where many of our problems and unusual happenings occur, so if you are confused refer to the  "DUH.... The other side of pay attention"  blog.. 2) Ask directions...  None of us was born knowing everything, so, yes even I (a man) have to stop and ask directions... This keeps us on the right road... 3) Plan your path...  Each of us needs to determine where we are going or else we end up where we did not wa ...   read more
