Walking on Sunday

wandering energetically in my home neighborhood

Oh, how I love Sundays. When I wake up Sunday morning I still have approximately 36 hours of freedom before my work week starts again. Yet it seems like I've experienced an entire relaxing weekend already. It's those 3-day weekends. They're great. Plus I don't work a 9-5 shift as many people do.

So, awakening with a sense of gratefulness is how my day began. Immediately, I thought about where I would be walking this morning. I decided on my own neighborhood. Why not?

A pleasant day, clear skies, chilly, with melting snow and icy patches still on the ground from a recent snowstorm. As I progressed westward on my own block, 3 separate joggers and a bicycling family passed me going various directions. Most were friendly, and greeted me. I like that about this neighborhood.

Though it seems like one continuous block, by the time one walks to the trail that leads to the lake that's due west of my house, one has already traveled 6 blocks or more. My pedometer registers this distance as slightly more than half a mile.

A walk around the lake seemed like a nice idea. My neighborhood lake. Surrounded not just by houses, but by several distinct neighborhoods. In some portions, there's a congested feeling. Other portions offer vast civilization-free vistas. Many people are out walking or jogging by the lake today. No bicyclists by the lake. People and dogs, and one woman on a horse.

I am liking the increase in my energy. This walking becomes more effortless each morning I go.

Halfway around the lake, I start thinking about coffee. Wild. Why? I have everything I need here. Pure water in a non toxic bottle. A healthy snack.

Coffee.

Well, more accurately, an espresso drink. Then, in my mind, I tone it down a bit to chai. Chai with rice milk. Somewhat healthier than coffee. And I love chai.

Then this mental picture of chai is what I look forward to after I walk home.

But there is more walking to do and the whole focus of being present that I had decided upon at the outset of my morning walks.

I notice many different kinds of birds on this walk. I make a mental note to study enough about birds indigenous to this area so that I actually know what type of birds I am looking at. Some are geese. They are easy to identify. I will learn more about the birds I am seeing.

Not sure how I feel about seeing people I know from the time my children were in school (they're grown now) and I realize I have perhaps some unresolved issues (translate: resentments) from those days. However I'm just out walking. This is not the time to even think about all that stuff, so I release it. Let it go. Forgiveness. Release. Bless these people, wish them well.

Returning home, my pedometer tells me this has been the longest walk yet. Almost 4 miles.

Chai time.
