AFTER THE STORM
Their romance is over, but Torrie Gonzales and Reny Cabral still care for each other, and she is strongly opposed to his being punished further for the attack on her that led him to be jailed. Ten Strikes Against Nuclear Power
Here at Co-op America, we’re working hard to heal the climate by transitioning our electricity mix away from its heavy emphasis on coal-fired power. In 2007, you helped us stop fifteen new coal plants, tell the financiers of major coal projects to stop funding coal, and persuade mutual funds to support shareholder efforts to mitigate climate change.
But all of that good work will be wasted if we transition from coal into an equally dangerous source – nuclear power, which is ... read more

Coffee Grounds Biofuel:
In Nevada, a chemical and engineering team at the University of Nevada has developed a process to convert used coffee grounds to biodiesel. The researchers says that up to 3 million gallons of biodiesel could be produced annually just from the 100,000 tons of coffee ground produced by Starbucks each year. The team said that it concludes that the coffee-ground oil feedstock would cost between $0.45 to $1.84 less than feedstocks such as corn or soy, is ... read more

California federal court imposes strict protections for whales against deadly Navy sonar
Jan 8, 2008
Fantastic news! A federal court in California has just imposed
the strongest-ever protections for whales against an onslaught
of military sonar.
The new controls are the result of an NRDC lawsuit that demanded
the Navy rein in its deadly sonar before beginning two years of
maneuvers near the Channel Islands -- one of the world’s most
sensitive environments and home to five endangered species of
whales.
The Navy itself estimates that the booming sonar would harass or
harm marine mammals some 170,000 times -- and cause permanent
injury in more than 400 cases.
