Buy ORGANIC Honey!   17 y
Strong evidence is emerging that it is the bee-keeping practices in non-organic commercialized hives that are largely responsible for the demise of the honey bee in what is known as "Colony Collapse Syndrome". Feral, or wild, bees are doing fine, as are bees from organic commercialized hives. Buy only ORGANIC honey and boycott non-organic honey to protest the practices of using pesticides & antibiotics in non-organic hives, as well as the bee-traumatizing practice of moving hives all over the country to pollinize commercial crops.

Boycott Non-Organic Honey! Organic Honey can be expensive. I bought these two products to have my kids taste-test as an alternative to commercialized, non-organic honey. Both were given the "stamp of approval" and are reasonable in price: Madhava raw pure-organic agave nectar net weight 17 oz 100% pure agave-nectar from agave salmiana produced from live plants product of MexicoBioAgriCert organic certification/USDA organic distributed by Madhava po box 756 Lyons, CO 80540 Agave@MadhavaHoney.com Cost: $4.31 purchased at Vitamin City ...   read more

Grasshopper Totem   17 y
Grasshopper appeared to me today in my back yard at a time when I am feeling much pain of growth and change.

photo by Liora Leah 5/19/2007 ”The Grasshopper The short horned grasshopper is related to the locust and both will be discussed here. As with all insects, they are cold blooded and are more active when it is warmer. Their are about 10,000 species and each has its own unique song. With a few exceptions only the males can sing. During courtship, male grasshoppers take turns singing songs, competing to outdo each other for the attention of the females. One of the gifts these insects hold is the power of song and sound. Song is an ancient way to alter consciousness and comm ...   read more

Organic Bees OK   17 y
While bee populations in commercialized hives are declining by rates up to 80%, organic honey bees are thriving!

Organic Bees Are Thriving While commercial bee populations are plummeting Friday, May 11, 2007      (EXCERPT) Over the past few weeks we have highlighted reports that suggest bee populations are declining at rates of up to 80% in areas of the U.S. and Europe. Experts are calling the worrying trend "colony collapse disorder" or CCD. While no one can pin point the exact reason as to w ...   read more

Shamanic Way of Bees   17 y
Just finished this fascinating book--The Shamanic Way of the Bee: Ancient Wisdom and Healing Practices of the Bee Masters by Simon Buxton.

from the back cover:   ”Bee shamanism may well be the most ancient and enigmatic branch of shamanism.  It exists throughout the world--wherever in fact the honeybee exists.  Its medicinal tools--such as honey, pollen, propolis, and royal jelly--are now in common usage, and even the origins of Chinese acupuncture can be traced back to the ancient practice of applying bee stings to the body’s meridians.   In this authoritative ethnography and spiritual memoir, Simon Buxton, an elder of the Path of Pollen, reveals for the first time the richness of this tradition: its subtle in ...   read more

Honey Bee Decline   17 y
California Senator Barbara Boxer writes about the decline in the honey bee population, and what it means for agriculture

Dear Friend: Bee colonies across the nation are in serious decline. This new, unexplained condition has become known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). It is estimated that about a quarter of the 2.4 million commercial bee colonies across the nation have been lost just since last autumn, and in some areas the loss is almost 90 percent. The impact of this loss is enormous because bees are the primary pollinators of much of the nation’s food crops. In California, producers of almonds, apples, alfalfa, avocados, blueberries, citrus, tree fruit, and ...   read more

Honoring Dead Bees   17 y
The bee story continues: There has been no bee activity for the past two days. Today I climbed the ladder to the eaves to retrieve the dead bees, and to peer inside the vent holes to see the bee hive for the first time.

Last night I could hear what sounded like bee humming coming from deep inside the rafters under the roof. Bees cluster at night and vibrate their wings to keep warm; I thought that there might be some still alive--maybe the queen in the hive and her attendants--although the majority of the worker bees were surely dead, their bodies easily seen at the openings to the vent holes under the eaves. Bees are neat creatures--they had shoved the dead out of the 1/4 inch holes in the vent covers, only to have the bodies trapped by the new 1/8” metal mesh that was put up four days ago to keep new b ...   read more

Bee Dream/Totem   17 y
I've been obsessed with bees this week. My Native American healer and my "bee-woman" friend both told me that bees symbolize community and one's living situation. I have been desperate to move to Topanga Canyon so I could be close to my group of women healers, yet I feel obligated to stay where I am for the benefit of my children.

The bees have been nesting in the rafters under my roof and the nests are inaccessable to being removed. The bees have thwarted efforts to be suctioned up by a bee-vac, and instead of flying out from the vents during attempts to vacuum them up, they have flown further up into the roof. The queen has hidden in the inaccesable hives; the worker bees will not leave the area as long as she is there. I’ve had to kill the bees with biodegradable soap as they cluster to get out of the vents to seek pollen for honey production. Killing them is the only way of preventing them from building a huge n ...   read more

Dying Bees   17 y
The bees are still here, but dying, and I'm slowly going mad.

This morning, bees were still trapped behind the vent mesh, pushing the dead bodies out through the vent holes as best they could. There was a baseball sized cluster of them outside the mesh trying to get in, and bees were flying all over the backyard. At least my daughter, who is very afraid of bees, went over her father’s house for the week, so she wouldn’t freak out at the sight of bees clustered right outside her bedroom window. I called the bee control folks and the boss said the clustering of the bees is normal, that it’s the ”last effort” of the bees to get back to the hive and b ...   read more

Bees are BACK!   17 y
I wrote in my blog that I had a bee problem, the bees were removed ecologically, and I was waiting for the bee control people to come back out to my house to put a fine mesh over the vent holes under my eaves to prevent future nesting. Well, nary two days went by and the bees are back!

The bees were building a third nest at the same site as the first two nests--in the rafters under the roof of my house. Again, they flew into the vent holes under the eaves of my house. This new nest is very tiny as it was only 2 days old. Apparently the queen wasn’t caught the first time the bee control people tried removing the bees; she must still be hiding out in one of the other little nests. On the second visit, the bee control people came to the house and scared away as many bees as they could by poking a stick at them (literally!). I asked them to vacuum up the bees again, but t ...   read more

Recovered blog: Vision and poem of Earth's energies following Topanga Canyon State Park walk

Dear All: A "missing blog": ***************************************************************** March 10, 2007 I had a two-hour healing session with an energy worker today, then took a walk at Topanga State Park before going home, to re-orient and ground myself so I could drive. It was hot and beautiful there, the first time I’ve walked there although I’ve passed it many times on my way to and from Dare’. After the walk, I stopped at the bathroom before getting in my car. When I was in there, I could see the bathroom wall in front of me "swimming" bef ...   read more

This one looks like a squirrel, this--a dragon, this a snake, and this a dragonfly. Bee Problem!   17 y
Honey Bees nested in the rafters under my roof! I didn't want to have them killed or use pesticides, and called around until I found an environmentally friendly pest control company.

Eco-Friendly Bee Removal I had to call a pest control company to remove bees that had nested in my house in the rafters just above my daughter’s bedroom ceiling. The bees had flown in through the vent holes on the side of the house, under the eaves. I had noticed a lot of unusual bee activity and called right away; fortunately, the bees were there less than one week and the two nests that were seen were very small--one a few inches in height, the second one less than that, so the bees were just starting their building process. The company I hired--ABC Bee Control--focuses on ...   read more

Pollution:Everyone's Business   17 y
Pollution and environmental degradation are EVERYONE'S business, whether or not you believe in man-made Global Warming

Thanks to everyone who responded to my recent blogs about global warming! We’re each entitled to our own opinions. Scientists don’t agree about whether global warming is related to man-made activity or is a natural earth phenomenon--the only thing everyone seems to agree on is that it is happening. I believe that it is both--due to man-made activity as well as natural earth phenomenon, with an emphasis on the natural earth occurance. As to what percent is due to what cause, who knows? and frankly, I DON’T CARE! What I care about, and what made me jump with joy to see that the Supreme ...   read more

Bush Doesn't Get It!   17 y
President Bush doesn't get that the United States needs to be a leader among nations to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, newly deemed by the U.S. Supreme court as a pollutant that contributes to global warming.

Liora’s Comment: What good does it do for the U.S. to be the richest nation in the world if the world as a whole is threatened with pollution so horrific that we and all of the natural world choke in our own emissions? Bush attaches conditions on court’s EPA ruling By Joel Havemann, Los AngelesTimes Staff Writer 5:54 PM PDT, April 3, 2007 WASHINGTON -- President Bush, acknowledging that humans are at least partly responsible for global warming, said Tuesday that he took ”very seriously” the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Environmental Protection Agency must regulat ...   read more

Polar Bear SOS   17 y
TAKE ACTION! Help protect polar bears by telling the Bush Administration to safeguard their critical habitat. Sign an online petition BEFORE APRIL 9 DEADLINE!

"Polar bears are completely dependent on Arctic sea ice to survive, but 80 percent of that ice could be gone in 20 years and all of it by 2040. Polar bears are already suffering the effects: birth rates are falling, fewer cubs are surviving, and more bears are drowning. The Bush Administration’s proposal to list the polar bear as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act is a crucial first step toward ensuring a future for these magnificent Arctic creatures. Yet the administration’s proposal does not designate "critical habitat" for protection, even though melt ...   read more
