I certainly think that is a valid point Grz, but in this election I don't think it has been the deciding factor. There has been a sort of Perfect Storm surrounding Obama's run this cycle. The Bush factor has probably been as important as anything - if we were coming off of eight years of a Republican President who was widely respected it would have been an uphill climb for any Democrat. However, it goes beyond that. McCain has made some major mistakes, such as "The economy is fundamentally sound" shortly before the global collapse to him picking Palin after knocking Obama for a lack of experience. He may have brought home some of the base but he lost many people on the fence. Obama has had many, many people across this nation willing to volunteer significant time on the ground to help get him elected. In fact it is unprecidented. It reminds me a lot of some of the campaigns where the so-called religious right was able to mobilize massive amounts of unpaid people to help elect a candidate. I personally don't think the money in this election has been as important as some people make it out to be. It is undeniable that Obama is a sharp, intelligent, well spoken guy. All of the Republicans I know who aren't voting for him say this. So much has happened during the last eight years that I think some people are willing to take a chance with him, and combined with the people who would vote Democrat no matter what, you have what looks like a resounding victory. I would be shocked if the polls are wrong, but I guess stranger things have happened.
