Re: Rancid Oil?

The same thing just happened to me. I bought the Trader Joe's organic olive oil (from Italy) and it was rancid. I just returned it for credit and did not even need the receipt.

Oil that is harmful does not need to be very rancid at all to be damaging to the body. Even oil that is ever so slightly rancid is damaging because the free radical effect has a cascading consequence.

Many times oils will seem fine when in the mouth. They may be sweet or nutty tasting without any sharp edges on the tongue or sides of the mouth. Often rancidity will show up after the oil has been swallowed where it will create a burning sensation along the sides of the throat.

So just tasting oils in the mouth is not a good enough test to determine rancidity.
