for root canals, it is necessary to go inside and clean the bacteria out, otherwise there is no place for it to go.  Some things are capable of killing some bacteria, such as laser, but some bacteria will remain and it will begin to grow.  anaerobic infections in root canals eat away bone and that dead jaw bone needs to be physically removed by going inside the jaw.
