THE DIABETIC FAMILY

There are two members of the diabetic family, IDDM (Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) and NIDDM (Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) that will be introduced after defining diabetes:

  • Diabetes mellitus is a disease of metabolic dysregulation, most notably dysregulation of glucose metabolism, accompanied by characteristic long-term vascular and neurologic complications.
  • IDDM = absolute insulin deficiency caused by atrophy of the islet cells of the pancreas.
  • NIDDM = Nearly normal islet mass, do not secrete sufficient insulin to meet the increased demand caused by insulin resistance.

 

RISK FACTORS OF NIDDM

  • The remarkable increase in the prevalence of NIDDM in the United States is commonly attributed to an aging population that is also increasingly obese and sedentary.
  • The prevalence of NIDDM among individuals older than 65 years may exceed 18 percent, and compared with normal-weight individuals, obese people (i.e., those who have a body mass index greater than 30) are at 10 to 20 times greater risk for NIDDM.
  • Almost 90 percent of NIDDM patients are obese.

Dr. S. Sweeny’s 1927 Experiments:

  • Healthy, young, medical students 2 days on very fat diet of olive oil, butter, mayonnaise made with egg yolks and 20% cream. Then did a Glucose Tolerance Test.

Before we show you the results of the Glucose Tolerance Test note what has been known in the scientific literature for more than 50 years:

More than 50 years in scientific medical literature:

  • Fats and oils (40-50% of caloric intake in the average American diet) interferes with the insulin activity on all body cells.
  • The cells of the body become unable to respond to the natural insulin produced by the pancreas and also to insulin injected by means of a syringe. Himsworth H. The physiological activation of insulin. Clinical Science 1:1, 1933

 
What this glucose tolerence test shows is that according to that standard test for making the diagnosis of diabetes is that all of the students had diabetes - or at least had a glucose tolerence test results of  a diabetec.  After some time Dr. Sweeny repeated the test on the same students.

 

Dr. S. Sweeny’s 1927 Experiments:

  • Same healthy, young, medical students - fed 2 days of very high carbohydrate foods of sugar, candy, pastry, white bread, baked potatoes, syrup, bananas, rice, and oatmeal. Repeated Glucose Tolerance Test.

 

What this test shows is that a high fat diet interfers with the body cells ability to use glucose so that after a fatty diet for 2 days the glucose tolerence test reflected the fact that the body could not use the blood glucose normally and gave test results that indicated that they were diabetic.  This temporary diabetes was directly caused by the high fat diet.  After the body had recovered from the effects of a high fat diet, the test was repeated with the same individuals, this time feeding them all the high sugar and carbohydrate foods that were commonly believed (and largely still believed today) to be the cause of diabetes.  When the glucose tolerance test was repeated - it was completely normal.  This shows that two days of a high fat diet causes temporary diabetes.  Two days of high refined carbohydrate diet did not cause diabetes like the high fat did.  This shows that high fats in the diet have more to do with the development of diabetes than does refined carbohydrates.

Records show that over the past 130 years that there has been a steady increase in the American diet from 25% to 40%.  This increase mirrors the increase in incidence of diabetes.  Dr Sweeny's experiments show that it is the increase in fat consumption that is contributing to the increase of diabetes in America.

The way to stop the epidemic of diabetes in the United States is to change the eating habits of America.  The way to cure those who already have adult onset diabetes is to decrease the fat intake in the diet (which means reducing the meat and milk in the diet) and increase the intake of complex carbohydrates in the diet. 

 

THE DIETARY ANSWER TO DIABETES

  • 1. Unrefined grains, e.g. whole wheat bread, whole cooked cereals, pastas, etc.
  • 2. Fresh, unprocessed fruits, are best.
  • 3. Unprocessed vegetables e.g. greens, beans, lentils, etc.
  • 4. Sparingly eat of whole nuts.

  Not only would these dietary changes cure diabetes but would also cure the epidemic of kidney disease that is being experienced in the United States.

The PROTEIN - KIDNEY CONNECTION.

  • Protein is not usually stored in the body.
  • Excess protein must be eliminated from the body.
  • Proteins are excreted in the urine and take calcium to neutralize the negative charge of the protein in order for the protein to be excreted in the urine.
  • Excess protein in the diet (beef, pork, turkey, fish, diary products, etc.) is responsible for kidney failure and osteoporosis.
