Here is my whack...

Well, sporting contraband unders would reflect negatively on the
keepers. Either, they are losing their *edge* and developing
compassion for their kept, or, there is a trade going on in an
underground business which could involve only sex as that would
be all the detainees could offer, in spite of my own feelings that
their religious beliefs would preclude that. In dire times, humans
will do what it takes to get through the day. I think Islamic men are
not supposed to see each other naked and so a pair of briefs would
be something highly desirable. It speaks to some level of
corruption which must be sophisticated, or not, to be able to
degrade the level of scrutiny Gitmo supposedly is based on.
So, like any scandal, those involved can be controlled by the
threat of not keeping silent...certainly a sign of fraying wills...

The second story is loosely connected to the acknowledgment
this week that one of the major mistakes made in the Iraq war
was that one of the first things done was to disband the Iraqi army.
Of course then the factions went into tribal mode and formed
their own militias, probably not so much with an intent to fight
Americans at that time, but to protect their own since the sects
are so ingrained with ancient distrust and hatreds that that is the
reason there will mostly likely never be peace there, or peace at
an enormous price. Saddam ruled with an iron fist for a reason
and since we did not step into those shoes because lack of
awareness that military officer who is "confessing" to the lack
of understanding is just one of the fall guys. The timing was
specifically because of the Presidential address which I did
not listen to but did listen to the rehash afterward and this admission
was a prominent one and being used as an excuse for lack of
success in *winning the war over terror*...
