Eric Edmeades and the XL Results Foundation Take Part in World Record Attempt on Kilimanjaro

XL Foundation Reaches for the Top in Africa   (21 August 2007)

The XL Results Foundation, the world's leading entrepreneur and social enterprise network, has set its eyes on the top of Africa, the very top. In October of this year, Bern Goosen, the first man to successfully summit Mount Kilimanjaro in a wheelchair, will attempt to break his own world record and set a new time for the fastest wheelchair summit. And XL will be right there with him.

This world record climb will mark the launch of XL into Africa, as Goosen will be accompanied by Eric Edmeades, XL Country Manager for South Africa, and his partner Elise Crozier. Edmeades and Crozier already run a series of successful Adventure Seminars(TM) -- one of which includes climbing Kilimanjaro (www.SYATT.info)

Edmeades and Crozier have a history of 'giving back'. In early 2007, they established the 'Build a School' initiative when they built their first third world school for the children of a Masai tribe who had little or no access to education. The Build a School initiative was born from their desire to leave philanthropic footprints behind each time they ran one of their now famous adventure programs.

Roger Hamilton, XL Group Chairman, commented "Eric and Elise are unique global social entrepreneurs that continually step-up to make a difference in many different parts of the world. Having Bern Goosen as XL's first Life Member in South Africa is truly inspirational to others as the XL Journey begins in Africa."

Goosen, who has been in a wheelchair since birth, has a powerful drive to change the way disabilities are viewed Africa. In many counties, disabilities such as his, are viewed superstitiously, as some sort of punishment handed down to the parents from their ancestors for some unknown wrong. As such, many disabled children are either left to die or left to live intolerable lives. They are often locked away and kept away from public scrutiny. Goosen's passion for building an educational facility for disabled children in Tanzania was so inspiring that Edmeades and Crozier decided it was an ideal project for the Build a School initiative.

Goosen's climb will take place in October 2007 and has received strong support from First Accent, Vodacom, The Technology Hub and SABC who will televise the event nationally. Vodacom and the Technology Hub will use the event to test and showcase new technologies including a transponder from Vodacom that will keep track of Goosen's chair and relay his position to his website ( www.GetMotivated.co.za
) in real-time so that fans can keep track of his progress. The Technology Hub is planning to provide and test a generator that can run above 5,000 metres, something previously held as impossible.

Bern Goosen is a motivational speaker, entrepreneur and world-record-holding mountaineer. He speaks internationally and became XL's first African Life Member when he joined in August 2007. Kilimanjaro is the world's tallest freestanding mountain, and Africa's highest peek at 5895 metres.
