Re: child's fever over 103
You might want to try this...

"Dr. Spock told of a good one...the Wet Rub. I used it to break a fever in one and a half minutes, in my less than a year-old son.
A neighbor had five years as an emergency room nurse. She took one look at my babe and said, "This child needs a wet rub!"
Out came the book, a clean sheet, and a bowl of tepid water (slightly warm to the touch).
As nearly as I can remember, this is the procedure...
Put the naked child into the folded sheet, so that they are covered except the part you are working on.
Take one limb at a time. Dip your own hands into the water, and very gently, lightly chafe the skin with your hands. (Keep your hands wet so they aren't rough on the baby's tender skin.)
The idea is to gently bring the blood to the surface of the skin, where evaporation of the wetness will cool the baby's skin.
Likely the baby will cry because of the contrast of heat and cold. Make soothing noises.
Take each limb in turn, returning the previous one under the sheet. I'd say to only work on each limb once, quickly.
I don't know if I was supposed to, but I gave him a quick damp gentle rub on his back and, I think, on his tummy.
By this time he was thoroughly ticked off, and there was nothing for it but to pick him up in a soft dry cotton blanket, or towel, and comfort him.
Wonderfully, the fever was gone.
You know, you read Dr. Spock, cover to cover, when you begin parenting, but simple things like a wet rub don't stick in your brain, probably because you can't yet imagine the situation where you would need the procedure."
Thank goodness for my smart neighbor!
