Close your eyes and follow nature and hope that something happens. DO you wonder if you are doing it right? Do you remain in one area or go back and forth in a circular motion? how important is your hand positioning? Is the desired experience something that will just happen or arise on it's own? how bout posture is it important? what state shall you end up in? and where is the revered state of ecstacy?
Touching the inner self in meditation is like as Ramana Maharshi said: Be as you are see who you are and remain as the self" When we touch the inner self we touch the knower. When we focus on self in such a determined manner we go deeper into awareness. Sitting is nice with the back straight hands folded is ok with awareness on the breath.
So when you sit for meditation to touch the inner self most important is to experience an unfoldment of the true nature, if you do not know how to achieve this you may go in the opposite direction you wish.
