Re: article: burgers, fries, and lawyers-- interesting read.

Fast food is a part of our culture and I don't see it going anywhere. Ultimately, the choice is ours on how we choose to eat. We should not expect corporate America (or any other country) and the government to make those choices for us. Recently I bought a large pre-made salad at my favorite deli near work. When I read the nutrition label I was shocked to see the salad had more calories than a Sonic cheeseburger. The dressing was made with trans-fats (partially hydrogenated oils), the cheese was imitation and the chicken was heavily processed. As it turned out, the Romaine lettuce was bitter and mostly stems. There was nothing good about that salad nutritionally or taste wise, but it sells well because people think they are making a healthy choice.

It is always up to the individual to choose what they will eat. We cannot and should not depend on commercial establishments, big corporations or the government to make the proper choices for us. Ideally, we should prepare our own meals from scratch so we know what we are eating, but realistically this is not always possible. Knowledge is power and we must take the responsibility to be aware of what we consume. Sometimes I do resort to fast food, usually Sonic because its so hard to maneuver in a wheelchair in most fast food places and many restaurants. I can buy smaller items, refuse to "Sonic Size", and make the best choices available to me at the time. Most importantly of all, I know I must look at my diet as a whole, not stress over a single meal. If I commit myself to a healthy Diet most of the time, avoid most refined and processed foods in day to day eating and do not overindulge, then I can enjoy an occasional cheeseburger or hot dog without fearing permanent damage. Those who kill themselves with food rarely do it in a single meal; it reflects a lifetime of poor choices and lack of either education or concern. As I said, knowledge is power, but putting that into practice may cost the lawyers some money.
