Solution

In any thread there should always be at least one message you can read (usually the top one). Just open this and reply to it with a blank message. Hopefully you should be able to read the rest of the thread now.

Don't ask me why this works - some kind of software glitch. Hopefully it will get sorted out sooner or later.
