Re: Educate your children
In this world, I would say that you must educate your children. Go to
http://www.fluoridealert.org
and show them pictures of dental fluorosis, now is the time to instill in them the need for self-education and the knowledge that purveyors have no interest in our health, dental or otherwise, in fact, the opposite is true. The cost of those "fun" flavors can be great, indeed... Harsh lessons, maybe, but necessary....

Unfortunately, fluoride is not the only harmful element found in toothpastes. An excellent post by Imalurnin:

Aside from the toxicity of fluoride, the abrasiveness of silica, and damage from sodium lauryl sulfate, is glycerine which prohibits the reenamelization of teeth and contributes to receding gums.
Dr. Gerard Judd,

"Plaque, a poorly formed crystal stuck to the bottom of the enamel, is prevented and eventually removed by brushing with bar soap...
Glycerine in all tooth pastes is so sticky that it takes 27 washes to get it off. Teeth brushed with any toothpaste are coated with a film and CANNOT PROPERLY REENAMELIZE...
Tooth enamel (essentially calcium phosphate) reacts with all acids to form cavities (see any chemistry text dealing with solubilities). The proton of the acid pulls the phosphate right out of the enamel, and fast. By drinking a sip of water along with the acid during eating, the acid reacts chemically with water immediately to form hydronium ion and thus the enamel is saved...
Sugars (fructose, glucose and sucrose) were found in my laboratory studies to be unable to dissolve calcium phosphate to any extent, even in hot water solution...
Fluoride at very low levels destroys at least 66 out of 83 enzymes...
Fluoride in the gels used (inappropriately) to harden the enamel is extremely toxic at a concentration of 13,000 ppm (1.3%)...."

A lot of people use a combination of baking soda/sea salt to brush. A widely available toothpowder is Ipsab, I've never tried it. I use microbrite toothpowder, it's less abrasive than baking soda/sea salt and has a pleasant minty taste.
Honestly, when you buy toothpaste, what you're paying for is mostly water...
Tom's of Maine makes a kid's toothpaste~ "silly strawberry". Tom's of Maine also formulates toothpastes WITH fluoride so I question the integrity/ethics of that company:

And, in the spirit of educating one's children, Eric Schlosser, the author of "Fast Food Nation" wrote a book geared towards pre-teens as well:
http://www.houghtonmifflinbooks.com/booksellers/press_release/wilson/
"In Chew on This: Everything You Don't Want to Know About Fast Food, Schlosser, along with co-author Charles Wilson, presents the fast-food industry to preteens, focusing on the aspects that will interest them most - the nonconformist teen entrepreneurs who founded the industry; the mistreatment of animals in slaughterhouses and employees in restaurants; the shocking effects too much fast food can have on growing bodies; and the impact of the industry on schools, communities, and the earth."
