Hi Minnie, I had some success using 5'-HTP also. Supposedly it's the chemical precursor to serotonin, the "well-being" neurotransmitter, so it's no surprise that it can help improve mood. From using this, and then looking at my symptoms (of which alcoholism was one of them), I learned that I had an overgrowth of candida. When I got the candida situation under control (mainly by diet change), I didn't need to use the HTP any more.
One thing I learned about candida is that it can impair your intestine's ability to absorb nutrients (including tryptophane, which cells in the intestine convert to 5-HTP). So what I'm saying is that maybe you've got a candida issue going on? At least it's something to look into.
