I also have insurance that will not pay for anything to do with TMJ. I did however, find out that by law if a doctor writes a letter to your insurance telling them that it is medically necessary they HAVE to cover it. This is the law in Florida and probably most states. Go to the website for the insurance commission and look it up. If you can't find it, call them. The only catch is that with my insurance, the letter had to come from a specialist, oral surgeon etc. Look into this, you might get the help you need. Not alot of people know this but my daughter works for a doctor and told me about it. If you need care for this and the doctor deems it medically necessary it is no longer considered cosmetic.
