Add Diced Yellow Onions To The Recall List

Jun 22, 2007 6:45 am US/Pacific

(AP) SACRAMENTO California officials are warning consumers not to eat certain brands of diced yellow onions sold by an Oxnard distributor to stores and restaurants in six western states.

State Public Health Officer Mark Horton says the onions could be contaminated with potentially deadly bacteria.

No illnesses have been reported so far, but Gills Onions is voluntarily recalling more than 45,000 pounds of onions that were sold to restaurants and Trader Joe's stores in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon and Washington.

The onions on sale at Trader Joe's are in 10-ounce, re-sealable plastic pouches and carry the Trader Joe's brand name.

Gills Onion started the recall after sampling conducted by the Washington State Department of Agriculture found Listeria monocytogenes in a pouch of Trader Joe's onions.
