DMSO solvent

DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) is a solvent. At Thistledown, a horse track in Northfield Ohio, it was rubbed on the joints of horses to relieve arthritic pain. I think equestrian-types are familiar with this use of DMSO.

Problem with DMSO is that it is rapidly absorbed through the skin directly into the bloodstream. This means, that if a sample of DMSO contains impurity X and one spills it on the skin, impurity X goes right into the bloodstream. For this reason, DMSO should only be handled by those trained in handling such materials who observe all necessary safety precautions.

Back when I had what I think was a subcutaneous cancerous capsular nodule on my calf, I would put Lugol's directly on the skin above that nodule, and hold my leg in place until the Lugol's dried. Then, I smeared one or two drops of DMSO on top of the dried Lugol's, with the theory being that the DMSO would dissolve the iodine, and carry it through the skin.

Whether this theory is correct or not is immaterial to me. That nodule is gone.

My great grandpappy had a nodule on his thigh at the time of his death at 87, it was the size of a grapefruit. He had it on him for over fifty years, and it was determined it was in fact cancerous ! The cause of his death was un-related to the grapefruit. Our bodies seem to have an ability to seal things up with capsular tissue so as to render them to not bother the rest of the body, in some cases, for several decades.
