Re: lobelia species
Audubon Workshop has some plants; they have a website. I have never seen wild lobelia.
I love lobelia, and used to always get the dried herb in the health food stores for my smoker friends. Now no more smoker friends, and I use it only occasionally for those with bronchitis, so I just buy or recommend the tincture. The dried herb is expensive if you were to buy a whole pound, but as the dose is very small, a handful makes enough for a very long time.
It is true that too much will make you vomit, but equally true that just a drop or two will stop vomiting. This is the guideline I use for bronchial congestion. One cup of herb to two to three cups of water. Boil for twenty minutes; cool. Add equal amount of hard liquor and let sit for as long as possible. Strain and put in dropper bottles. Three to four drops in just a little water (1/3 to 1/2 cup; can take as often as feeling congestion. Works similar to Robitussin, making coughs more productive.
My cousin, who has asthma, produces handsful of mucus when she takes it.
If someone has flu with vomiting, a drop or two in water will stop it. It will also relax one (ME!)to go to sleep easily.
