Abcessed tooth/safest protocol?

Dear Sir;

My hubby has an abcessed #10 (18 months now) He has decided to get it pulled and have a bridge installed. Should he take anti-biotics before the extraction? I hate anti-biotics but I am concerned that a cavitation may form that will damage his health in later life.
My old dentist drilled out the infected bone of my extraction, but he got chased by quack busters and is under investigation, and prosecution now, so is not an option.
