If she wasn't having an active outbreak...
the chances of transmission from a single incident are pretty low. The GSK study a few years ago of a fairly large group where the female was infected and the male was not showed an **annual** transmission rate of a little less than 4% assuming that no precautions are taken. If you add Valtrex to the mix, then the risk decreases by at least 50% to under 2% **per year**. Now, that is statistical information that applies to a statistical group and cannot predict the outcome of an individual case. Your odds do seem to definitely be in your favor.
Another thing to think about is that, of the people who are infected, the vast majority have no noticeable symptoms, so if you were to be infected, you may never know it and would never be bothered by symptoms.
Now, if you do think that you are developing symptoms, it's a good idea to get to a doctor or clinic as soon as possible so you can start on antiviral meds as soon as possible so as to minimize your symptoms. Be sure to get a type specific culture done on it so you know for sure the type, 1 or 2, of your infection.
Sorry the girl didn't do the right thing. Telling is tough, but it's got to be done.
Let me know if you have more questions.
Good luck.
