Safe to have entire tooth extracted instead of just amalgam?

I've read how risky it is to have an Amalgam removed. Would it be safer, easier, and cheaper to just have the entire tooth removed/pulled? Also, how does one go about finding a dentist who is sympathetic to mercury toxicity caused by amalgams, and about how much does it cost to have the Amalgams removed?
I have two fillings towards the back of my mouth.
