porcelain crowns

Dear detox dr

Bout two years ago I had two amalgums replaced.

The dentist who replaced my amalgums did not seem to take any special precautions.
He simply drilled around the fillings and popped them out
his assistant replaced them with (?) a white filling.
Since this dentist is farther away from me
I decided to go back to my regular one
for a check up and cleaning also some gumline cavities
since silver isn't used in these. (or is it?)

The lady who cleaned my teeth was pleased
with their condition, however she is urging me to get crowns
on both back molars and, if I understand her correctly,
also on the bottom front teeth I retain.
Her arguement is that the porcelain fillings that THEY put in need to be proteced
(covered) so the back molars can be saved.
Since this is the same dentist that tried to do a root canal on the same tooth twice
I'm wondering if I should just seek help elsewhere.
As of now I'm planning to go back and get the rest of my front/bottom teeth
taken care of. I might make an attempt to send them some "literature"
but as of now don't think I'll be getting crowns from them.

I need to know what questions to ask a dentist before I decide to become a patient.
Is there a list or reference of some kind of some kind?
Thank you all for taking the time and attention that you have.
margie
