This vaccine looks very good so far in the studies with mice. There's a lot of ground to cover before human testing can begin. This is an attenuated live virus vaccine where there is an actual infection with the modified virus. In this case the virus is modified to be deficient in a key protein which the unmodified virus uses to inhibit the effect of the immune system's interferons. Without the protein, the immune system can effectively block replication of the virus keeping it from recurring as outbreaks. This is somewhat controversial since it is an actual infection with a live virus. That's the reason for lots of safety testing up front. It costs big $$ to do that. Contributions anyone?
