Yes, you are right, especially as it regards MS-based software tactics, which is now chielf among the reasons why I have not downloaded a "security patch" for close to three years. I eventually found the correct tools to disable auto updates in Firefox. My evaluation comments were with respect to the default settings, which has auto-update enabled and this was part of the evaluation experience. At least until I found the correct tool, to the novice, this has the effect of 'can't turn off'.

The big-company description for Alexa sounds as benign as does Avenue A, but to repeat, if it's truly harmless, why hide this fact, why insert the cookie clandestinely, why not just write a header for the cookie that provides a notice something like "dear web browser, here is a harmless cookie we call Alexa, it is harmless and will only track your web activity, then report back to us so we may better market you in a harmless way, of course" ?
