Milk of Magnesia Abuse

I believe my wife is taking too much Milk of Magnesia, and has begun to have serious side affects. She has had problems with constipation, gas, etc for several years now. She started to take Milk of Magnesia and it helped both with the constipation and other gastro distress, but now she has lost over 40 pounds in the last year (she's at 86 pounds now) and I believe her remedy is the cause. Recently while on vacation, she took 4 12oz bottles over the course of 8 days. I a very worried that this stuff is killing her. Can Magnesium Hydroxide interefere with the absorption of nutrients?
