What's Your Menopause Type?

Type 1: Symptoms: Hot flashes, irritability, insomnia, anxiety, frustration. Possible spotting. Active libido. Mood swings can lead to uncharacteristic harsh outbursts directed at family and friends.
Herbal Support: Use vitex to boost progesterone; black cohosh for overall symptoms; and St. John’s wort for anxiety.
Vitamins and Minerals: Multivitamin/mineral.
Extra antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E, beta carotene and the mineral selenium) to boost progesterone production.

Type 2: Symptoms: Depression, anxiety, lack of motivation. Thin, dry skin, vaginal dryness, lack of muscle tone. Low libido. Possibility of increased risk of endometrial, breast cancer and osteoporosis.
Herbal Support: Take black cohosh for overall symptoms; St. John’s wort to relieve depression and anxiety; Siberian ginseng to increase testosterone; and vitex to boost progesterone.

levels, but only after progesterone levels are restored.

Type 3: Symptoms: Heightened anxiety, possible panic attacks, high risk of sleep problems, possible growth of facial hair, insulin resistance, obesity, uterine bleeding. Possible increased risk for endometrial cancer, breast cancer, osteoporosis and heart disease.
Herbal Support: Alleviate depression with St. John’s wart; boost estrogen with alfalfa; and relieve fatigue with adaptagenic herbs like astragalus and Asian ginseng.
Vitamins and Minerals: Multivitamin/mineral. Add boron.

Type 4: Symptoms: Feelings of emptiness leading to depression, signs of excessive aging in skin, severe vaginal dryness, low libido, painful sex, urinary incontinence. Difficulties with memory and learning.
Herbal Support: Increase estrogen with alfalfa; boost testosterone with damiana; fight fatigue with Asian ginseng and schisandra; boost mental functioning with ginkgo; relieve depression with St. John’s wort.
