Root canal or Extraction

I have an abscess on my gums between the first premolar and the second premolar on the bottom set on the right hand side, the first premolar has half the tooth filled with an Amalgam filling and the second premolar has 3/4 tooth filled with an Amalgam filing.

I had it drained and the dentist prescribed AB's, but it never healed; I have had this abscess for over 3mths, it is not causing any pain but I have to empty the contents 3 times a day.

I have been oil pulling and rinsing my mouth out with salted water, I am with a new dentist and he wants to do a root canal next week; do I need a root canal or should I opt to have the offending tooth or teeth pulled.

Or any suggestions.

Regards
