Intermittant Pain In Penis After Lesions Have Healed
I was diagnosed with genital herpes in August and was put on Valtrex 1 gram per day for 2 months, then after lesions had healed it was reduced to 1 gram per day. I do have some doubts that it is HSV2, because I've had HSV1 for years and had a coldsore just before the lesions on my penis appeared. At the initial exam, my Dr. even said that it did not look like an initial outbreak of HSV2 and said it was probably type 1 acquired from oral sex from my wife. When I asked him if I could have passed the type 1 to my penis by touching the coldsore and then touching my penis he said he did not know if this was possible. I was using Abreve on the coldsore and was therefore touching it at least 5 times per day. However, when the test came back they said it was Genital Herpes. I had never had an outbreak and my wife of 5 years has never had one. She has not been tested and I still have not inquired what type of test was used due to other health issues, etc. At any rate, I did have lesions on my foreskin and bumps in the crevice of the penis head. My main problem is that I am still (after almost 4 months) still having pain in my penis, that comes and goes. It seems to get worse in the evening sometimes to the point I will take Ibuprofen for the pain. It sometimes feels like an irritation of the head of penis, other times an "ache". It sometimes hurts worse after urination. I doubt that it is a urinary infection, because I recently took 3 500 mg. Amoxicillin per day for 10 days after a tooth extraction which should have knocked out any infection. I have read about "postherpetic nueralgia" associated mainly with Herpes Zoster (Shingles related to Chickenpox), but also read that it is possible with genital herpes. Has anyone else had this experience with intermittant penile pain after all lesions have disappeared? Thanks.
