Non-Bacterial Prostatitus

I am new to this forum, but I joined to see if I could get some answers to an 8 year old problem.

I have been widowed for several years now, and since being single, I have not engaged in any sexual activity. I have developed prostatitus symptoms, which have been very uncomfortable at times. These symptoms have prompted me to see my physician on a regular basis.

Now, almost 8 years later, I have finally been referred to a Urologist who diagnosed me with non-bacterial prostatitus through a DRE and the subsequent massaging of my prostate. Now that we know that it is non-bacterial, apparently there is nothing to be done to correct the situation.

I have had 3 doctors this year tell me that I should be playing with yourself, spanking the monkey to occassionally flush out the prostate. Apparently, this is healthy for the prostate (as opposed to not having sex).

However, all of my life I have dealt with a moral issue with self-gratification and feel very guilty doing so. At times there is tremendous pain associated with ejaculations (whether I do indulge myself or through nocturnal emmissions). Since I have not been given any Antibiotics to combat the infection, I have been resigned to live with this for the rest of my (single) life, however long that may be.

I am a very active and healthy 49 year old... no smoking, drinking, drugs, sexual activity.

Can someone offer any suggestions as to what I might to to improve the health of my prostate?

Thanks in advance.
