Re: Annual Vaccinations
You are fortunate to have such a wonderful outdoor area for your cats. Most people aren't so fortunate.
I think indoor cats should be spayed and neutered, just as outdoor cats, mainly because they could get out sometimes accidentally. This doesn't change my opinion about the vaccinations. I was just sharing my opinion regarding the risk of vaccinations, and when it might be warranted, such as for outdoor cats. Certainly, if an indoor cat is a repeat escapee, he or she should be considered, an outdoor cat. I have had more than my share of sick strays show up at work, with Feline Leukemia, which makes me feel that
vaccinations are a good idea, especially in populated areas. If you live in a remote area, perhaps you don't have to worry about that specific disease, but rabies shots might be a good idea being that rabies isn't species specific.
As far as sedentary lifestyles, this could be a problem for indoor cats, but it really depends on the housing in question and the cat owners ability to motivate the cat to exercise. My cats have a protected outdoor enclosure, which makes them think they are outside free, but they are not. I once met a lady who had made her entire large yard into an enclosure with lattice and screen, so her cats could feel free, yet remain protected. Perhaps my enclosure will be that large someday! :-)
