Re: quinine tonic water
Schweeps quinine water is sold at most stores, Canada Dry also sells tonic water with quinine. My step dad was a pharmacist, the old fashioned kind, he used good tonics not bad drugs and he taught cosmetic pharmacy, mixing colors etc. to cosmeticians, and then he bacame an atty and was the atty for the pharmacutical industry in our state. (btw- not all pharmies and pharmie drugs are evil, asparin is made from willow bark tree). He drank and had us drink quinine water as a regular tonic beverage, a bitter.
The medical dose of quinine used to kill a bad case of malaria (threadworms) is 250 milligram doses. the average dose of quinine in schweeps is 20 milligrams per small glass, 6 ounces I think, it could be a higher mg per glass dose. Anyway,we drank quinine as a regular beverage tonic and a low dose malaria preventative.
Quinine is made from the bark of the chinchoa, sp? tree that grows in the rainforest. Another reason to save the rainforest. It is a very bitter alkaloid herb and known world wide as the cure for malaria. 2/3rds of the worlds population get and die of malaria.
Quinine is sold as a bitter powder in medical form, an rx is needed for larger doses, the 20mg per glass in otc quinine tonic water is what we use as a preventative dose. If you like the taste of bitters, quinine tonic water is a nice drink.
