Plantar Fasciitis-what to do about arch pain?

Information the doctor gave me: The plantar fascia is a thick, fibrous matrial on the bottom of the foot. It is attached to the heel bone (calceneus), fans forward toward the toes, and acts like a bowstring to maintain the arch of the foot. Plus a prescription for motrin. The doctor said it may be an inflamation and gave me a list of 4 exercises to do like picking up marbles with my toes, towel curls and towel slides with toes and stretching calf by leaning toward a wall.

The arch of my foot hurts whenever I step on the ground. I used to go for a fast walk in the morning, but now its too painful to do that. I gave up my dress shoes for tennis shoes. Is there some thing(s)lacking in my diet, or something I should do (besides soaking in Epsom Salts ) or read on the Internet? I eat a lot of carbohydrates like candy, ice cream, peanut butter. (That is probably the wrong thing to say on this health conscious message board.) I don't think the exercise is enough to correct the problem and I am at a loss. Also, I don't have much feeling in my feet--tested by neurologist--can't find anything wrong.

A diabetic relative of mine had a foot aputated due to bone damage resulting from walking on broken foot bones but not feeling it. I am not diabetic but I am worried. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
