Re: As a soldier, how did my NDE change me?
I don't know what churches you have attended that say these hate things. I am
an adult convert to Christianity after being an atheist all my childhood and young adult years, and where I go to church we are urged to resist war and resist hating anyone. Yet, as a Catholic, I have learned that there is also, in rare circumstances, a so-called just war. Certainly in World War II, evil had to be done to stop a greater evil. And as bad as some of the things that many of the conquistadores did in Mexico in the 16th century, the non-stop, daily human sacrifices(up to 100,000 year) of the Aztecs had to be stopped. I haven't yet figured how we can be good people in the world like it is. How we resist evil without becoming evil ourselves? Perhaps it lies in resisting clear evil at all costs without hating. I am deeply troubled about the Iraq invasion. Yet, I see a religious group that not only has an issue with the West, sometimes justified, but has equal enmity towards the Hindu people in India and commits there acts of violence against them! I could not forebear living in a regime that practiced genocide or in one that did female circumcision on my daughters. I would draw some line in the sand--so I guess I'm not a pacifist.
