Adoption
There is a psychological condition know as the "don't be" syndrome for adopted children. No matter how happy the child is during their upbringing, there is always some dysfunction brought about by this happenstance. This is one of the pioneer psychologists studying the affects of adopted children.

Now, if a child was born, and there were no options, then a adopted family tie would be the optimum scenario.
You may go on and live your life, having been adopted, and then have children of your own. However, I don't believe this lessens the dysfunction, but instead strengthens it. After all, once you are a parent, you wonder how your biological parent could have given you up?
There are thousands of people who are looking, sometimes desperately, for their biological parents. They pretty much all say the same thing...I've always felt there was a big empty hole inside.
