copper iud problems

I'm actually writing for my sister, who is in Mexico right now, and without access to understandable or reliable medical care -

She had a copper IUD implanted a few weeks ago, and is experiencing heavy bleeding, though it is not time for her period. She's working on taking precautions agains anemia, but unsure as to what she might to to lessen the blood flow... any suggestions?

She'll be back in the states in about a week, unless she or I hear that she's in serious medical danger...
