Persistent vaginal odor

For almost 2 yrs I have had a vaginal odor that has worsened in the last 4 months.
Last month my GP prescribed Metronidazole suppositories for 5 nights. The next day I developed a large amount of dark discharge that lasted 3 days. I was odor free for about 3 days and then the odor returned as bad as before.
I am 78, not sexually active. There is no discharge, just a slight tan spotting on pad liner.
I am a type II diabetic, enjoy sweets after meals,take 1 fish oil capsule daily.
What should I do now?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
