Intra uterine contraceptive devices can cause prolonged menstrual bleeding though not necessarily from the time they have been introduced into the uterus. Also other common causes would be hormonal imbalance and fibroids in the uterus. If you can rule out the two conditions and when found normal you can go ahead with the removal of IUD.
