Testimony of Love
Baby Jonathan
Today, Theresa walked up the two flights of steps into the NVIC office. With tears in her eyes and only ten days following an emergency caesarean section to deliver her 9 pound baby boy, Jonathan, she told us how she contracted a bacterial infection prior to birth and how she was loaded with
Antibiotics and not allowed to nurse her newborn baby. She elected not to have her son circumcised and when she did not want her baby taken to the nursery the nurses told her she was being a bad mother.
The pediatrician came in with the syringe to inject baby Jonathan with hepatitis B vaccine within a few hours of his birth. Theresa refused. She described to us how as a child she suffered with seizures following her own vaccinations, that she had previously miscarried twins and had spent four years getting ready to have this baby. She told us that she thanked God everyday during her pregnancy and prayed that nothing would hurt this baby.
She expressed fear because once she refused the vaccine, the doctor refused to treat her son. She was concerned because of the pressure other family members will place on her to vaccinate.
I was so touched by this young mother. I told her that she had the wisdom and the ability to make decisions for Jonathan no matter who she came up against. I told her to stand strong for what she believed was the best course of action for her baby and that she would make the right decisions for her baby. Then we prayed for her and helped her back to the car.
When I looked at baby Jonathan in the car seat, I was reminded of what a miracle life is, how precious it is and what a gift it is from God. I know that NVIC made a difference for this mother today and for this baby. That is all anyone can ask for.
Where would she have gone if NVIC were not there? She needed a human touch,a hug and a prayer to get through today. As the holiday season approaches, please include NVIC on your list of gifts. Help us continue to make a difference - one baby at a time. After 23 years of doing this work, I know there is not a more important mission on earth than fighting for a mother's human right to protect her child from harm.

"Once there was a young boy walking on the beach throwing the washed-up
starfish back into the ocean. A stranger passing by asked why he was doing
that because he could not possibly save all of them. The boy picked up a
starfish and threw it into the water and said, "I made a difference for that
one!"
