Needs Space, or Breaking Up?

My boyfriend for the last year asked for space the other day. I didn't know how to take it and I assumed we were breaking up. I was absolutely heart broken because just a couple days before that he took a half day of vacation to come to my work an hour away and bring me out to lunch where we had our first date exactly a year before.

This came totally out of the blue and I am taking this harder than my divorce. I called him that day and asked him if I could drop off his keys and garage door opener and pick up my stuff. His answer was that I would have to go over there right after work because he wouldn't be able to see me.

I purposely left some things over there to see if he will give them back, but 4 days have gone by and I haven't heard anything.

Do you think it is really over or does he just need a break?

I am having a really hard time with letting him go and I find myself staying obnoxiously busy to keep everything off my mind and hope like hell he comes back.
Any suggestions?
