Youngest son progress report - Amazing!!

For all who sent such wonderful healing energies - THANK YOU!!

Two weeks ago yesterday he had skin grafts done on all the burn sites. Because of their location (upper inner thighs/lower buttocks/perianal area and knee/calf/shin) and the severity (some muscles were burned beneath as well), the doctor's best expectations were for 70% to possibly 80% "take" or success. Even so, we all considered it an thought any help towards healing the areas would be welcome. Amazingly, he was blessed with 98% take.

Ninety-eight percent success! WhooHoo!! His doctor was almost overwhelmed when he un-wrapped the initial surgery bandages. I almost thought he was going to break into a little happy dance, hehe. His skin nurse just kept repeating "Beautiful, just absolutely Beautiful!" She had her own grafts as well and knows from both ends how fantastic this is.

His back and pelvis still bother him, understandably, but the prognosis for both is Very Good. The 35 (we counted) staples in his head to reattach the scalp healed so smoothly that, when he had his hair cut today, the scars are so hard to see we had to search for them to show the hairdresser where to be careful. He lost NO hair, zero, zip. And it all kept growing so thick and fast that he HAD to have a haircut - he couldn't see through his hair!

And NO brain function impairment - NONE!!

Aside from the slow rehab and therapy to rebuild muscle from immobility and trauma, the only physical concern left is some worrying numbness/lack of response in his left leg. He still needs to grab it and move it with his hands until he's upright. It will support his weight, but it doesn't respond well when he tries to make it lift on it's own. We're hoping that this will come back with more intensive physical therapy.

Emotionally, he still has bad moments - no kid his age likes to feel so dependent and vulnerable and he is still so weak. This looks to be another area that has a long haul ahead.

The best news - he came home TODAY!! YEA!!!

Hopefully, this will go along ways towards improving his mood and we've noticed an improvement just in the few hours he's been here. He's currently on his own bed in his own room chatting up a storm on the computer with his friends. There is still a long, slow road ahead for him with much painful physical therapy, but he's HOME!

Many, many heartfelt thanks to all who included him (and us) in their thoughts and sent healing energy this way. Blessed be all of you! =)

Time to think of dinner - such a wonderful feeling to not have to grab whatever and run out the door to the hospital!
