I totally agree that Atkins was hijacked. The original Atkins diet contained none of these so-called nutritional bars and such. The original diet stressed less processed food as well as cutting out Sugar and other harmful substances. Unfortunatley, many people who claimed to be on Atkins never read the books. They simply started eating lots of meat and/or cheese and called themselves doing a low carb diet.
The other reasons I am grateful for Atkins is becuase his book alerted me to Candida overgrowth. Atkins was the first big lifestyle book I read that really spoke about Candida as an underlying cause of weight gain and other problems.
Finally, I find it sad that all of these diets spend time tryig to tear each other down when they really are not that far apart. Most of the reputable diets stress eleimination of Sugar and highly processed foods. If they would stop bad mouthing each other's diet then maybe Americans would not be so confused about what is and is not good and take control of their weight.
