Most studies have shown that low carb/high protein diets are very effective in lowering cholesterol. Remember, your body (the liver) produces about 80% of all cholesterol, the rest comes from dietary sources. The liver produces cholesterol mainly to process extra carbohydrates into fat. It seems that one of the main culprits for high cholesterol is the over consumption of simple carbs (white foods: sugar, flour, pasta, rice). They key here is over-indulgence, and these foods drive insulin based cravings. It's ironic because these are the foods most people are told to eat when they have high cholesterol.
