you don't necessarily need a "person" as a guide, you can have sacred plants guide you directly. Being the apprentice of a shaman means being guided towards the real masters, the plants. But nowadays you can do without a person, as the availability of plants and techniques on how to use them is not such a problem any more.
My husband, who's for sure been a shaman already, began as a very small kid using dreams, and after when teen-ager he used weed shamanically. So you see, things can be that simple.
When the time comes, you will be able to go the amazonic forest, or to mexico, whatever, and get in touch with the living tradition of the shamanism by the indios, and above all get in touch with the soul of plants as you only can feel it in the deep jungle
